2011 Šotimaa

Tänase päeva kõige olulisem eesmärk oli Laphroaigi viskitehase külastus. Selle viski kinkisid mulle sünnnipäevaks ka minu kallid külalised (nagu te juba aru saite on täna kirjutajaks Teet).

Huvitav on muidugi juba see asjaolu, et ühel Hiiumaa sarnasel saarel asub kaheksa viskitehast. Veel kummalisem on aga see, et jalutades Selveris oli seal müügil neist umbes viie tehase toodang.

Nüüd aga veidi lähemalt. Mis siis on ühe hea viski olulised koostisosad.

Today’s most important goal was to visit the Laphroaig whisky distillery. This whisky was also given to me for my birthday by my dear guests (as you have already realized, today’s writer is Teet).

It’s interesting, of course, that on one island similar to Hiiumaa there are eight whisky distilleries. Even more peculiar is that walking in Selver, products from about five of these distilleries were on sale there.

But now in a bit more detail. What are the essential ingredients of a good whisky.

Kõigepealt vili. Šoti viskit tehakse odrast. Laphroaigi valmistamisel valmistavad nad 15% toorainest ise traditsioonilisel meetodil ja see annabki viskile tema erilise maitse. Terad lastakse veidi idanema ja siis fermenteeritakse neid nädal spetsiaalses ruumis. Peale seda kuivatatakse terad erilises ruumis, mis näeb välja üsna suure suitsuahju sarnane. (Omal ajal suitsetatigi seal lisaks ka sealiha). Kütteks kasutatakse kohalikku turvast (selle rohkus ongi vist viskitehaste rohkuse põhjuseks). Turvast lõigatakse käsitsi, sest siis jääb turbasse rohkem niiskust ja see tekitab tugevama suitsu.

First, the grain. Scottish whisky is made from barley. In making Laphroaig, they prepare 15% of the raw material themselves using the traditional method, and this gives the whisky its special taste. The grains are allowed to germinate slightly and then are fermented for a week in a special room. After that, the grains are dried in a special room that looks quite like a large smokehouse. (In the past, pork was also smoked there). Local peat is used for heating (its abundance is probably the reason for the abundance of whisky distilleries). The peat is cut by hand, because then more moisture remains in the peat and it produces stronger smoke.

Edasi on asi üsna tavaline. Saadud mass pannakse käärima, destilleeritakse ja pannakse tammevaatidesse laagerduma.

Koos meiega oli tuuril väga rahvusvaheline seltskond. Eesti, Soome, Rootsi, Brasiilia ja Uus-Meremaa olid kõik esindatud kahe inimesega. Ilmselt on põhjamaade tugeva esindatuse põhjuseks ka see, et esimesena õnnestuski seda viskit eksportima hakata põhjamaadesse. Siis tuli USA, kus muuseas oli see ainus viski, mida tohtis keeluseaduse ajal müüa, kuna see kvalifitseerus oma spetsiifilise maitse tõttu ravimiks.

After that, things are fairly standard. The resulting mass is fermented, distilled and placed in oak barrels to mature.

With us on the tour was a very international crowd. Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Brazil and New Zealand were all represented by two people each. Probably the reason for the strong Nordic representation is also that they first succeeded in starting to export this whisky to the Nordic countries. Then came the USA, where, by the way, this was the only whisky that was allowed to be sold during Prohibition, as it qualified as medicine due to its specific taste.

Edasi tulime juba tuttavat teed pidi tagasi Obanisse. Siin on meie koduks Backpackersite hotell. Meeldiva üllatusena tuli välja, et meid oli upgrade’tud ja paigutatud sviiti. Sviit tähendab küll siin seda, et meil on oma toas oma vannituba ja WC. Aga peale seitset ööd telgis magamist on see midagi väga ebatavalist:). Lausa uskumatu tunne on see, et riideid seljast võttes ei hakkagi kohe külm.

We then came back to Oban on the already familiar road. Here our home is the Backpackers hostel. As a pleasant surprise, it turned out that we had been upgraded and placed in a suite. Suite here means that we have our own bathroom and WC in our room. But after seven nights of sleeping in a tent, this is something very unusual :). It’s quite an incredible feeling that when taking off your clothes, you don’t immediately get cold.

Linn on väga ilus ja homme läheme 7-tunnisele merereisile eesmärgiga näha mõnda huvitavat mereelukat.

The town is very beautiful and tomorrow we’re going on a 7-hour sea trip with the goal of seeing some interesting marine life.

Alustasime päeva hästi varakult, kell 7 väljusime juba majast, pidime Obanist praamiga Mulli saarele jõudma ja sealt veel bussiga saare teise otsa sõitma. Olime planeerinud tänaseks 7-tunnise merereisi, lootuses näha delfiine, vaalu, hülgeid ja teisi siin vetes elutsevaid olendeid.

We started the day very early, we left the house at 7 o’clock already, we had to get from Oban by ferry to the Isle of Mull and from there still travel by bus to the other end of the island. We had planned a 7-hour sea trip for today, in hopes of seeing dolphins, whales, seals and other creatures living in these waters.

Koos meeskonnaga oli meid laevukesel 26 inimest, kõigile jagati binoklid, räägiti lähemalt, mida ja keda võime päeva jooksul kohata, paluti kõigil hästi tähelepanelikud olla ja kui kellegil on õnn mõnda veeelukat näha, siis tuleb sellest kõigile märku anda.

Together with the crew there were 26 of us on the small boat, everyone was given binoculars, we were told more about what and whom we might encounter during the day, everyone was asked to be very attentive and if anyone is lucky enough to see some sea creature, then everyone should be alerted to it.

Laeva meeskond koosnes viiest tudengist (2 noormest, 3 tütarlast), kõik nad olid väga tähelepanelikud, abivalmid, rääkisid palju ümbritsevate saarte ajaloost, taimestikust, loomadest-lindudest. Laev ise oligi teaduslike uuringute läbiviimiseks ja selliste turismigruppide vaatlustuuridega nad saavad oma teaduslikku tööd rahastada.

The boat’s crew consisted of five students (2 young men, 3 girls), they were all very attentive, helpful, talked a lot about the history of the surrounding islands, vegetation, animals and birds. The boat itself was for conducting scientific research and with such tourist group observation tours they can fund their scientific work.

Tänase päeva ilma kohta võib öelda, et enam paremaks minna ei saa!!! Täiesti selge sinine taevas, päike säras ning meri oli praktiliselt tuulevaikne. Merereisiks täiesti ideaalne ilm! Minu ootused vaatlustuuri suhtes olid pisut suuremad, mõtlesin, et näemegi delfiine laeva kõrval veest välja hüppamas, aga suures osas kujunes meie reis rohkem linnuvaatlustuuriks-neid seal ikka nägi ja tudengid osaksid kõigi kohta ka juttu juurde rääkida, nii et iseenesest oli ka see huvitav. Paar korda küll õnnestus näha väikeste delfinide selga ja uimeid, aga seda kahjuks nii korraks. Nad käivad ainult hetkeks veepinnal hingamas ja siis kaovad jälle tükiks ajaks. Laeva kapten nägi ka kääbusvaala seljauime, selleks ajaks, kui teised jõudsid reageerida, oli vaal juba kadunud. Ka paari hüljest nägime, nii et päris tühja meie merereis siiski ei läinud. Nautisime lihtsalt ilusat päeva, vaated meid ümbritsevatele saartele olid taaskord muinasjutuliselt ilusad.

About today’s weather one can say that it couldn’t get any better!!! Completely clear blue sky, the sun was shining and the sea was practically calm. Completely ideal weather for a sea trip! My expectations for the observation tour were a bit higher, I thought we would see dolphins jumping out of the water next to the boat, but largely our trip turned into more of a bird watching tour – we certainly saw them there and the students could tell stories about all of them, so in itself it was also interesting. A couple of times we did manage to see the backs and fins of small dolphins, but unfortunately only briefly. They only come to the water surface for a moment to breathe and then disappear again for a while. The boat captain also saw a minke whale’s dorsal fin, by the time others managed to react, the whale had already disappeared. We also saw a couple of seals, so our sea trip didn’t go completely empty after all. We simply enjoyed the beautiful day, the views of the islands surrounding us were once again fairy-tale beautiful.

Tänane päev oli meil põhimõtteliselt puhkepäev. Homme alustame koduteed ja tänase päeva plaan oli seda lihtsalt maksimaalselt nautida.

Today was basically a rest day for us. Tomorrow we start our journey home and today’s plan was to simply enjoy it to the maximum.

Hommikul magasime kaua, mõnulesime köögis hommikusööki süües ja panime üles eilse päeva blogisissekande. Kuna päike säras, siis läksime lihtsalt linnapeale jalutama. Kõigepealt läksime uurima kummalist amfiteatri moodi ehitist, mis kroonib linna ühte kõrgendikku. Seda märkasime juba esimesel korral Obanist läbi sõites ja nüüd oli uudishimu suur, et teada saada, miks selline kummaline ehitis siia on rajatud. Nüüd saame ka seda teadmist jagada. Ehitise nimi on McCaig’i torn ja see on püstitatud umbes aastal 1900. Ehitist finantseeris ja juhtis üks kohalik pankur, kes oli ka filantroop ja kunstikriitik. Päris selgust ei saanudki, kas tegemist oli ühe suure ego tripiga, heategevusliku ettevõtmise või hoopis mõlema seguga.

In the morning we slept long, enjoyed breakfast in the kitchen and posted yesterday’s blog entry. Since the sun was shining, we just went to walk around town. First we went to investigate a strange amphitheater-like structure that crowns one of the town’s elevations. We had already noticed this the first time we drove through Oban and now the curiosity was great to find out why such a strange structure had been built here. Now we can share that knowledge too. The structure’s name is McCaig’s Tower and it was erected around 1900. The structure was financed and directed by a local banker who was also a philanthropist and art critic. It never became quite clear whether this was a big ego trip, a charitable undertaking, or a mixture of both.

Ehitis pidi tulema märksa võimsam. Müür pidi tulema veel ühe avaderea võrra kõrgem, lisaks pidi rajatama ka vaatetorn ja müürisisesele alale püstitatama hr. McCaig’i ja tema perekonna kujud. Asi jäi pooleli kuna projekti rahastaja suri. Samas oli sellel tegevusel ka teine pool. Müüri ladusid kohalikud müürsepad talveperioodil, mil neil muidu töö ja ka sissetulek puudus. Reegel oli, et tööd tehti ainult siis, kui muud tööd ei olnud. Kujud oli plaanis tellida kohalikelt kunstnikelt, et nende tööd esile tõsta ja ka neile väärilist tasu maksta. Igatahes on tulemus väga silmatorkav ja huvitav.

The structure was supposed to be much more impressive. The wall was supposed to be one more row of arches higher, additionally an observation tower was to be built and statues of Mr. McCaig and his family were to be erected in the area inside the wall. The matter remained unfinished because the project’s financier died. At the same time, this activity also had another side. The wall was laid by local masons during the winter period, when they otherwise had no work and no income. The rule was that work was done only when there was no other work. The statues were planned to be commissioned from local artists, to highlight their work and also pay them proper compensation. In any case, the result is very eye-catching and interesting.

Peale seda jalutasime mööda mere äärt ühe huvitava luuderohuga kaetud kindlusetornini. See oli pärit 15ndast sajandist ja seal oli kohaliku klannipealiku asupaik.

After that we walked along the seaside to an interesting fortress tower covered with ivy. It was from the 15th century and was the seat of the local clan chief.

Tähistasime oma viimast päeva Šotimaal mõnusa õhtusöögiga restoranis. Homme algab kodutee!

We celebrated our last day in Scotland with a nice dinner at a restaurant. Tomorrow the journey home begins!

Neljapäeva hommikul alustasime tagasisõitu kodu poole. Aeg on tõesti sealmaal, et kauem ei tahagi kodust eemal olla. Oleme Šotimaast suhteliselt hea ülevaate saanud, muidugi on kohti, kus käia ja mida vaadata küll ja veel, aga aitab selleks korraks! Tagasiteel sõitsime läbi Glasgow eeslinna, tegime Tescos väikese peatuse ja varusime õhtuks ja hommikuks söögipoolist – oleme ju selle öö taas kämpingus. Üldiselt oleme oma reisidel suuremaid linnu vältinud, motikaga on seal paras ukerdamine. Ja selline eeslinnadest läbisõit ei anna kahjuks head ülevaadet linnast. Usun, et Glasgow on tegelikult palju kenam, kui mulje, mis meil sellest põgusast sissepõikest jäi.

On Thursday morning we started our return journey home. The time has really come that we don’t want to be away from home any longer. We have gotten a relatively good overview of Scotland, of course there are places to go and things to see plenty more, but enough for this time! On the way back we drove through Glasgow’s suburbs, made a small stop at Tesco and stocked up on food for the evening and morning – we’re in a campsite again tonight. Generally we have avoided larger cities on our trips, with the motorcycle there’s quite a hassle there. And such a drive through the suburbs unfortunately doesn’t give a good overview of the city. I believe Glasgow is actually much nicer than the impression we got from that brief detour.

Shotimaa piiri ületasime täpselt kell 14.00, nüüd jõudsin näha silti, mis tervitas meid Inglismaale jõudmise puhul. Ja nii imelik, kui see ka pole, hakkas siinkandis taas vihma sadama. Shotimaale mindes jäime täpselt samas kandis vihma kätte. Ju siin on need orud sellised, mis kõik vihmapilved kinni püüavad.

We crossed the Scottish border at exactly 2 PM, now I got to see the sign that welcomed us upon arriving in England. And strange as it may be, it started raining again in this area. Going to Scotland we got caught in the rain in exactly the same area. These valleys here must be such that they catch all the rain clouds.

Plaanisime telkida samas kämpingus, kus ennegi olime, hea tuttav koht juba ja väga ilus koht! Üllatav oli, et praktiliselt kõik telkimiseks mõeldud kohad olid juba hõivatud ja paar kohta oli nädalavahetuseks broneeritud, nii et me saame oma ühe öö kenasti ühe sellise platsi peal siin ära veeta.

We planned to camp at the same campsite where we had been before, a good familiar place already and a very beautiful place! It was surprising that practically all the places intended for camping were already occupied and a couple of spots were reserved for the weekend, so we can nicely spend our one night on one such pitch here.

Ma ei imesta, et siin nii palju puhkajaid on, piirkond on tõeliselt ilusa loodusega – mäed ja nõlvad, hästi huvitav vahelduv loodus ja nagu ma aru saan, on see midagi sarnast nagu meil Lahemaa rahvuspark – puutumatu loodus ja püütakse säilitada kõik olemasolev sellisena nagu on kunagi olnud.

Homme õhtuks jõuame Harwichi sadamasse ja laupäeva hommikul oleme Hollandis. Siiani on kõik läinud plaanipäraselt, isegi rohkem, kui plaanipäraselt-Shotimaal olles ei saanud me ju praktiliselt kordagi vihma ja Backpackersite hostelis paigutati meid hoopiski sviiti, kuigi olime leppinud hoopis lihtsamate võimalustega.

Soovin siit omaltpoolt kõigile ACE Xdream’ikatele edu nädalavahetuseks!! Endal on mul hea meel, et ise osa võtta ei saa. Ma suutsin Kieli laevaski paar korda korralikult ära eksida, mis siis pimedas orienteerumisest rääkida – mul on selles osas ikka palju arenguruumi :). Nii, et olge tublid!!

I’m not surprised that there are so many vacationers here, the area has truly beautiful nature – mountains and slopes, very interesting varied landscape and as I understand, it’s something similar to our Lahemaa national park – untouched nature and they try to preserve everything existing as it once was.

By tomorrow evening we’ll reach Harwich harbor and on Saturday morning we’ll be in Holland. So far everything has gone according to plan, even more than according to plan – while in Scotland we practically never got rain and at the Backpackers hostel we were placed in a suite, although we had agreed to much simpler options.

I wish all ACE Xdream participants good luck for the weekend from here!! I myself am glad that I can’t participate. I managed to get properly lost a couple of times even on the Kiel ferry, what to speak of orienteering in the dark – I still have a lot of room for development in that area :). So, be excellent!!

Vahepeal on mitu päeva kirjutamata jäänud. Sellel on olnud põhiliselt kaks põhjust: ei ole olnud erilisi muljeid ja ei ole olnud ka sobivat hetke. Nüüd aga siis lühike kokkuvõte, mis vahepeal toimunud on.

Several days have gone by without writing. This has had mainly two reasons: there haven’t been special impressions and there hasn’t been a suitable moment either. But now then a short summary of what has happened in the meantime.

29ndal jätkasime sõitu Inglismaal. Päev möödus ilma vahejuhtumiteta ja jõudsime aegsasti sadamasse. Seal saime veidi aega veeta, kohvi juua ja raamatut lugeda. Siis lasti meid praamile, kus me kõhu täis sõime ja magama läksime.

On the 29th we continued our journey in England. The day passed without incidents and we reached the harbor in good time. There we got to spend a bit of time, drink coffee and read a book. Then we were let onto the ferry, where we ate our fill and went to sleep.

30ndal oli üks tõsine sõidupäev (selle reisi pikim). Alustasime Hollandis, siis edasi Saksamaal. Ilm hakkas tasapisi soojemaks minema ja pealelõunat tõusis temperatuur praktiliselt esimest korda reisi jooksul stabiilselt üle 20 kraadi. Laupäeval olid teed autosid täis ja saime tunnikese ka kiirteel ummikus konutada. See oli tõsine trenn vasakule käele, millega pidi pidevalt siduriga toimetama. Nagu mingi ekspander. Sadama lähedal ootas meid uus häda. Alguses arvasime, et ka seal on mingi ummik, aga tegemist oli üle 10 km pikkuse praamijärjekorraga. Siin kasutasime ära mootorratta eelist ja sõitsime 8 km lihtsalt järjekorrast mööda. (Ega asi tegelikult väga jõhker ei olnud, sest tsiklitel on praamis eraldi kohad ja ühegi auto edasi pääsemine meie tõttu ei viibinud). Viimase lõpu seisime siiski ära, kuna ei olnud kindel, et enam järjekorda vahele saame. Seega jõudsime Taani poolel alles pimedas ja kämpingusse juba peale kelle kümmet. Seal oli siiski sõbralik kämpingupidaja, kes meile telkimiskoha kätte juhatas. Kui telki saime, siis hakkas vihma sadama. Uni vihmakrabina saatel oli uskumatult mõnus. Hommikul sadas ka veidi, aga siis tuli päike välja.

On the 30th was a serious riding day (the longest of this trip). We started in Holland, then onward in Germany. The weather gradually started getting warmer and in the afternoon the temperature rose practically for the first time during the trip stably above 20 degrees. On Saturday the roads were full of cars and we got to inch along in a traffic jam on the highway for an hour. This was serious training for the left hand, which had to constantly work the clutch. Like some kind of hand exerciser. Near the harbor a new trouble awaited us. At first we thought there was some traffic jam there too, but it was a ferry queue over 10 km long. Here we took advantage of the motorcycle’s benefit and simply drove 8 km past the queue. (The matter wasn’t really very rough, because motorcycles have separate places on the ferry and not a single car’s passage was delayed because of us). However, we stood the last bit, because we weren’t sure we could still get into the queue. So we only arrived on the Danish side in the dark and at the campsite already after ten o’clock. There was still a friendly campground keeper who showed us to a camping spot. When we got into the tent, it started raining. Sleep accompanied by the patter of rain was incredibly pleasant. In the morning it rained a bit too, but then the sun came out.

Tänane päev on läinud lihtsalt sõites. Taani ja pool Rootsit. Midagi erilist ei juhtunud. Rootsi teed on mõnusalt tühjad (Inglismaaga võrreldes).

Today has been spent simply riding. Denmark and half of Sweden. Nothing special happened. Swedish roads are pleasantly empty (compared to England).

Hea on olla jälle kodus! Vahepeal peab korraks kaugemal ära käima, et aru saada, kui hea siin ikka olla on!

Paar viimast sõidupäeva saime tõelist suve nautida, Taanis ja Rootsis näitas termomeeter 25-26 kraadi. Kui Šotimaal olles ma ei teadnud, mida veel selga toppida, et soojem sõita oleks, siis nüüd saime ainult T-särgi jope alla jätta!

It’s good to be home again! One must go away for a while to realize how good it is to be here!

The last couple of riding days we got to enjoy real summer, in Denmark and Sweden the thermometer showed 25-26 degrees. While in Scotland I didn’t know what else to put on to ride warmer, now we could just leave the T-shirt under the jacket!

Esmaspäeva öö veetsime Kappelskäri kämpingus, et teisipäeva hommikul sealt laevale minna. Taaskord saime ühe positiivse kogemuse osaliseks: olin aru saanud, et Teet broneeris meile nö tekikohad, aga anti meile hoopiski kajut, mis mulle vägagi ära kulus. Mul läks öösel kell 4 uni ära, vist juba kojujõudmise ärevus oli sees ja kajutis oli hea magamata und tasa teha. Ja teiseks oli pileti hinna sees ka rikkalik lõuna- ning õhtusöök! Väga positiivne kogemus jällegi! Ilm oli täiesti tuulevaikne ning kodutee merel kulges rahulikult.

We spent Monday night at Kappelskär campground, to board the ferry on Tuesday morning. Once again we had a positive experience: I had understood that Teet had booked us deck seats, but we were given a cabin instead, which suited me very well. I woke up at 4 in the morning, probably the excitement of getting home was already there and in the cabin it was good to catch up on lost sleep. And secondly, the ticket price also included a rich lunch and dinner! A very positive experience again! The weather was completely calm and the journey home across the sea went smoothly.

Paldiskisse jõudsime kell 22, natuke veel sõitu läbi karge õhtu ja olimegi kodus! Siim ootas meid pikisilmi, me ei olnud teda 3 nädalat näinud. Täna, 3. augustil on tema sünnipäev, ta pakkus eile õhtul välja, et võiksime juba öösel sünnipäeva tähistama hakata, aga meil olid siiski mõned ettevalmistused vaja teha, nii et siiski täna hommikul äratasime ta laulu ja tordiga üles.

Kokkuvõttes olen väga rahul, et nii pika reisi ette võtsime, nägime palju ilusat ja huvitavat. Meie ratas pidas suurele koormale väga hästi vastu, mitte ühtegi probleemi terve sõidu vältel rattaga ei olnud. Ise oleme rõõmsad ja terved, ei jäänud seal külmas kliimas haigeks. Ainult minu põlved hakkasid jälle viimastel sõidupäevadel tundma andma, päris raske oli ratta seljast maha tulla, aga kui natuke sai sirutatud, siis oli jälle mingiks ajaks korras. Ja Teeduga ei tekkinud meil ka kordagi lahkarvamusi, eks need eelnevad pikad sõidud on ka kogemusi andnud ja õpetanud 🙂

We reached Paldiski at 10 PM, a bit more riding through the crisp evening and we were home! Siim was waiting for us eagerly, we hadn’t seen him for 3 weeks. Today, August 3rd is his birthday, he suggested last night that we could start celebrating the birthday at midnight, but we still had some preparations to make, so we woke him up this morning with song and cake.

Overall I’m very satisfied that we took such a long trip, we saw many beautiful and interesting things. Our motorcycle held up very well to the heavy load, not a single problem with the bike during the entire journey. We ourselves are happy and healthy, didn’t get sick in that cold climate. Only my knees started giving signs again in the last riding days, it was quite difficult to get off the bike, but after stretching a bit, it was fine again for a while. And Teet and I didn’t have any disagreements even once, I guess those previous long trips have also given experience and taught us 🙂
